The coverage data were uploaded by banks on the Jan Dhan Darshak App and included bank branches, Business Correspondents, and India Post Payments Bank centres.
Village Banking Coverage
India has 6,01,328 inhabited villages, and 6,00,868 of them were covered by a bank branch, Business Correspondent, or India Post Payments Bank centre as of 17 July 2026. The banking outlet network included more than 1.81 lakh bank branches, 17.36 lakh Business Correspondents, and 1.65 lakh India Post Payments Bank centres.
Policy Framework for Rural Banking
The objective of the banking access framework is to provide a banking outlet within 5 km of every inhabited village. The Reserve Bank of India permits commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks, local area banks, and regional rural banks to open branches anywhere in India without prior approval, subject to a 25% branch requirement in unbanked rural areas.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana had opened 58.77 crore accounts by 17 July 2026, with a combined balance of Rs 3,12,414 crore. The Jan Samarth Portal is a digital platform for government-sponsored loan and subsidy schemes.
