Important Contactless Payment Technologies

Contactless payment technologies have made digital transactions faster, safer and more convenient by reducing the need for physical contact between the payment instrument and the terminal. In India, the push has come through NFC-based payments, UPI-linked contactless features and AI-enabled tools that improve user control, transaction speed and security.

Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology

Near Field Communication is a short-range wireless technology that allows two electronic devices to communicate when brought within a few centimetres of each other. It works through electromagnetic induction between two loop antennas and is widely used in contactless cards, digital wallets and tap-based payments.

For payments, an NFC-enabled smartphone or device is tapped near a compatible terminal. The device then emulates a payment card and transmits the required transaction details securely over the short range.

UPI Tap & Pay

UPI Tap & Pay is a contactless payment feature introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for NFC-supported smartphones. It simplifies Unified Payments Interface transactions by removing the need to open a UPI application before making a payment.
