Ig Nobel Prizes 2026 Awarded for Unusual Research
The 36th annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony was held on 3 September 2026 at the Zurich Convention Center in Switzerland. The event was hosted outside the United States for the first time in its history, and the awards are associated with the Annals of Improbable Research.
Ig Nobel Prize
The Ig Nobel Prize is a satirical award series that recognises research with unusual or humorous themes. The prizes are presented in several fields, including Chemistry, Medicine, Biology, Physics, Economics, and Peace-related categories in different years.
Notable 2026 Awarded Studies
The Chemistry Prize went to Leonard “Leo” Chavas, Ramaswamy Subramanian, and Nathan Coussens for work on protein crystals in the milk of the Pacific beetle cockroach. The study found that the milk contains more than three times the energy of cow’s milk.
The Medicine Prize was awarded posthumously to Tokuji Unno of Asahikawa Medical University for a 1977 aerodynamic study on how people blow their noses. Miki Takahara accepted the award on his behalf.
The Biomechanics Prize went to Matilda Brindle and Stuart West of the University of Oxford, along with Catherine F. Talbot of the Florida Institute of Technology, for defining kissing in a scientific manner across ants, birds, polar bears, and humans.
Research Themes in Other Categories
The Soil Science Prize went to researchers from the University of Zurich and the Agroscope research institute for the “Underwear as Evidence” project. The project used 2,000 pairs of buried cotton underwear to assess soil health.
The Economics Prize was awarded to Paul Piff, Daniel Stancato, Stéphane Côté, Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton, and Dacher Keltner for a study on unethical behaviour among wealthier individuals. The research included an experiment involving candy reserved for children.
The Biology Prize went to a team led by João Miguel Alves-Nunes for a study on stepping on venomous snakes to examine bite triggers. Later coverage stated that the study was retracted because of concerns over animal research protocols.
