Government Releases First Services Production Index

Government Releases First Services Production Index

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released India’s first trial Index of Services Production (ISP) for April 2026 on 14 July 2026. The trial index covers 19 formal services sub-sectors and uses 2024-25 as the base year.

Index of Services Production

The Index of Services Production is a monthly indicator for measuring short-term changes in the output of the formal services sector. The index is designed to complement the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), which measures changes in industrial output in India.

Coverage and Base Year

The inaugural ISP covers 19 formal services sub-sectors, which together represent about 60% of India’s formal services economy. The base year 2024-25 provides the reference period for comparing monthly movements in the index.

April 2026 Trial Data

In April 2026, 14 of the 19 sub-sectors recorded double-digit year-on-year growth over April 2025. Accommodation and food services grew by 37.2%, retail trade by 30.8%, administrative and support services by 28.7%, and real estate by 27.7%. Air transport contracted by 13.9% in April 2026, while railway transport declined by 0.4% in the same month.
