ICGS Akshay Commissioned at Goa Shipyard
The Indian Coast Guard commissioned ICGS Akshay, a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel, on 27 June 2026 at Goa Shipyard Limited in Vasco, Goa. Akshay is a 52-metre indigenous vessel built by Goa Shipyard Limited and is the fourth ship in the Adamya-class patrol vessel series.
Fast Patrol Vessel Class
Fast Patrol Vessels are coastal security ships used by the Indian Coast Guard for patrol, interception, and law-enforcement duties. ICGS Akshay belongs to a fleet of eight Adamya-class vessels being developed for coastal security operations.
Indigenous Design and Propulsion
ICGS Akshay was built under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. The vessel has more than 65% indigenous content and uses Controllable Pitch Propeller-based propulsion technology, which is the first such system in a Coast Guard vessel class in India. It is powered by two 3,000 kW diesel engines.
Technical Features and Crew
The vessel has a displacement of 320 tonnes. It is manned by six officers and 35 sailors, and Commandant (Junior Grade) Deepak Choubey commands the ship. The armament includes a 30 mm CRN-91 naval gun and two 12.7 mm stabilised remote-controlled machine guns.
Operational Roles
The vessel is designed for Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance, fisheries protection, coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy operations, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and marine environmental protection. These tasks fall within the statutory functions of the Indian Coast Guard under maritime security and safety duties.
