All-India Tiger Estimation 2026

The sixth cycle of the All-India Tiger Estimation (AITE) began in January 2026 across India. The exercise uses field surveys, camera traps and genetic sampling to assess tiger numbers and habitat conditions.

All-India Tiger Estimation

The All-India Tiger Estimation is a nationwide wildlife census for Panthera tigris. India conducted the previous estimation in 2022, when the tiger population was estimated at 3,682, which was about 75% of the global wild tiger population.

Methodology of the 2026 Cycle

The 2026 estimation follows a three-phase method. Phase I covers sign surveys and habitat assessment from January to February 2026. Phase II uses camera trapping for 40 to 60 days. Phase III includes genetic sampling for DNA analysis. Forest staff, volunteers and wildlife experts participate in the exercise across tiger landscapes. The final report for the 2026 cycle is expected in 2027.

State-Level Field Exercises

Tamil Nadu began Phase I field exercises on 5 January 2026 across its five tiger reserves. Karnataka also started its Phase-I exercise on 5 January 2026 across 54 forest divisions, with 400 field staff and 550 camera traps in Bandipur Tiger Reserve and other locations. Telangana completed its initial tiger census survey between 19 and 25 January 2026 and documented 994 pieces of evidence related to tigers and other carnivores. Preliminary findings from Amrabad Tiger Reserve in Telangana were reported on 27 June 2026. The survey identified 42 individual tigers, compared with 36 in the previous survey.

Amrabad Tiger Reserve Survey

The Amrabad Tiger Reserve survey covered 2,611 sq km from November 2025 to June 2026. It used 2,240 camera traps and recorded 18 females, 14 males, two sub-adults and eight cubs. Camera traps in Amrabad also captured the Indian Grey Wolf, a species listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Schedule I includes species that receive the highest level of legal protection under the Act.
