Government proposes three-year PUC validity for BS-VI vehicles

The Union government proposed a revised validity period for the Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) for BS-VI-compliant private vehicles on 27 July 2026. The draft notification was issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) under the PUCC 3.0 plan.

Pollution Under Control Certificate

The Pollution Under Control Certificate is a statutory document issued after an emission test for motor vehicles in India. It is linked to the Motor Vehicles Act framework and is used to check compliance with prescribed emission limits.

Proposed validity for private vehicles

Under the draft rules, BS-VI private vehicles up to six years old will have a PUCC validity of three years. BS-VI private vehicles between six and ten years old will require annual renewal, and BS-VI private vehicles older than 10 years will need renewal every six months.

Proposed validity for transport vehicles and older emission standards

For BS-VI transport or commercial vehicles, the proposed PUCC validity for vehicles up to six years old is two years from the date of first registration. BS-IV vehicles will continue to require renewal every six months, while BS-I, BS-II and BS-III vehicles will need renewal every three months.

Draft rule process

Objections and suggestions on the draft notification may be submitted within 30 days from the date the notification is made available to the public. The final rules will be considered after this consultation period.
