Global Conference on Women in Agri-Food Systems Begins in New Delhi
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is organising the Global Conference on Women in Agri-Food Systems (GCWAS–2026) from 12 to 14 March 2026 at the Bharat Ratna C. Subramaniam Hall, ICAR Convention Centre, NASC Complex, New Delhi. The three-day international event aims to highlight the crucial role of women in agriculture and promote gender-inclusive development in agri-food systems. The conference is being organised in collaboration with several national and international organisations and is expected to draw wide global participation.
High-Level Participation and Inauguration
The conference will be formally inaugurated by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, will attend the inaugural session as the Guest of Honour. The valedictory session will be addressed by Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, as the Chief Guest. The event is being held during the United Nations-declared International Year for Women Farmers in 2026.
Organising Institutions and Global Collaboration
The conference is jointly organised by the Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences (TAAS), ICAR, the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPV&FRA). More than fifteen national and international organisations are participating as co-organisers and knowledge partners. The programme is being guided by senior experts including Dr Raj S. Paroda, Chairman of TAAS, and Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General of ICAR.
Focus Areas of the Conference
The theme of GCWAS–2026, “Driving Progress, Attaining New Heights,” reflects the global focus on empowering women farmers. The conference will host over 700 participants, including scientists, policymakers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, development professionals, women farmers, start-ups and students from across the world. Key technical sessions will discuss gender equality in agricultural policies, economic empowerment of women through entrepreneurship and value chains, and the role of technology and climate-smart innovations in agriculture.
