The first edition of Nomad Film Festival 2016 has started at the India Islamic Cultural Centre in New Delhi to raise awareness and change perceptions regarding the denotified tribes. It will showcase short films as well as documentaries on the lives of the tribes. The tribes were listed as ‘Criminal Tribes’ under the 1871 Criminal Tribes Act during the British rule.

The Union home minister Rajnath Singh has recently approved the use of chilli-based PAVA shells for crowd controlling as an alternative to pellet guns, which would still be used in rarest of rare cases. The PAVA stands for Pelargonic Acid Vanillyl Amide, also called Nonivamide, and are an organic compound found characteristically in natural chilli pepper. The PAVA shells are non-lethal munition which temporarily incapacitates the targets and renders them immobile for several minutes. The T V S N Prasad expert committee, which has recently submitted its report to Home Secretary, has recommended the use of PAVA as an alternative to pellet guns.

The Union Health Ministry has recently launched the “Leprosy Case Detection Campaign (LCDC)” to eradicate leprosy by focusing on 149 endemic districts in India. The aim of 2-week-long massive campaign is to cover 20 states, 149 districts and 1,656 blocks, where nearly 3 lakh health teams will undertake door-to-door visits to detect and treat leprosy and stop its spread. The campaign will be till September 18, 2016.
