Cabinet Approves Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana
The Union Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) on 31 July 2026 for expansion of floating solar power capacity in India. The scheme has a total outlay of ₹5,070 crore and targets 5,000 MW of Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FSPV) projects by 2030-31.
Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana
PM-SSY is a Central sector scheme for floating solar projects on reservoirs and other suitable inland water bodies. The scheme provides Central Financial Assistance of ₹1 crore per MW for eligible projects after commissioning.
Floating Solar Photovoltaic Projects
Floating Solar Photovoltaic systems place solar panels on water surfaces instead of land. India has about 700 MW of installed floating solar capacity, and the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh accounts for a major share of this capacity.
Energy Storage and Implementation
The scheme includes co-located Energy Storage Systems with a minimum storage capacity of two hours, equal to 10,000 MWh. The projects will be sanctioned between FY 2026-27 and FY 2030-31, and financial support will continue up to FY 2032-33.
Important Facts for Exams
- The Solar Energy Corporation of India will implement the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana.
- The scheme is expected to attract an investment of around ₹28,500 crore.
- The National Institute of Solar Energy has estimated India’s floating solar potential at about 102.18 GWp.
- Floating solar projects are commonly developed on reservoirs, lakes, and other inland water bodies.
Exam-Relevant Static Facts
Central Financial Assistance is a direct fiscal support mechanism used by the Union Government for eligible renewable energy projects. Energy Storage Systems are used to store electricity and supply it when solar generation is low or unavailable.
