Bird Survey Dharoi 2023

The Gujarat Forest Department, BCSG (Bird Conservation Society of Gujarat), and the Adams Nature Retreat Resort together organized the bird survey in Dharoi Gujarat. It is a wetland and is spread over 107 square kilometres. The wetland is located in the trijunction of the Mehsana, Banaskantha, and Sabarkantha districts. During the survey, the bird watchers mapped and recorded the population and diversity of waterfowl in Dharoi. For this reason, the survey was unique and the first of its kind. The first Bird Survey Dharoi was conducted in 2022.

Key Findings of the survey

  • As the temperature has started increasing during winter, the population of birds in the region has reduced. Only black ducks are left
  • There are more than 616 bird species in the state of Gujarat. The surveyors found only 193
  • International migratory species such as European wigeons, garganeys, gadwalls, northern shovelers, and northern pintails were also spotted

Background

The Dharoi reservoir, where the survey was held was created by constructing dams on HArnoi and Sabarmati rivers in 1978. The purpose of the dam was irrigation.

Significance

The bird survey helped to learn about the declining population of the birds in the area. Immediate government actions are required to conserve bird diversity and save the bird population.
