Bihar Launches Major Women Employment Scheme
The Government of Bihar recently initiated the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana to empower women economically. Prime Minister Narendra Modi transferred the first instalment of ₹7,500 crore to 75 lakh women. This scheme supports women to start their own businesses across rural and urban areas. The initiative aims to boost employment and strengthen Bihar’s economy.
Scheme Overview
The Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana provides ₹10,000 directly to eligible women. This amount is a grant and does not require repayment. The scheme targets women aged 18 to 60 who belong to economically weaker sections. Priority is given to those without a steady income or permanent job. Unmarried adult women who have lost their parents are also eligible. The scheme covers members of Jeevika Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and women from nuclear families.
Application and Implementation
Over 1.11 crore applications have been received so far. The Rural Development Department manages rural applications, while urban areas fall under the Urban Development Department. District Magistrates have been instructed to organise local events at district, block, cluster, and village levels. These events ensure active participation of women and SHGs. The scheme was approved by the Bihar State Cabinet on August 29.
Financial Support and Follow-up
The initial transfer of ₹10,000 aims to help women start their chosen businesses. After six months, a performance review will take place. Eligible women entrepreneurs may receive an additional grant of ₹2 lakh. This follow-up support encourages sustained business growth and long-term economic empowerment.

The scheme focuses on creating employment opportunities for rural women. It aims to reduce poverty and improve living standards.
