Veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja died on 10 June 2026 in Chennai at the age of 84, with some reports placing his age at 85. He was admitted to MGM Healthcare in Chennai on 27 December 2025 for breathlessness and a severe lung infection, and a medical bulletin on 5 January 2026 stated that he was responding to treatment.

Bharathiraja was known as “Iyakkunar Imayam”, a Tamil phrase used for “peak of directors”. He made his directorial debut with 16 Vayathinile in 1977, a Tamil film that is widely associated with rural themes and village settings.
