ANNAM.AI Smart Weather Stations Deployed in Kerala

Kerala has begun integrating ANNAM.AI smart weather stations under its 100-day action plan for climate-smart agriculture as of 28 July 2026. The stations use artificial intelligence to provide hyper-local weather and farm data for decision-making at the field level.

ANNAM.AI and Digital Public Infrastructure for Agriculture

ANNAM.AI is a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture at IIT Ropar, which functions with support from the Ministry of Education. The project is developing a digital public infrastructure for agriculture, a term used for shared digital systems that support public service delivery and data-based applications. The smart weather stations provide information at a 3-kilometre resolution. The system tracks solar radiation, soil moisture, wind patterns, humidity, and rainfall for agricultural use.

Climate-Smart Farming Applications

Climate-smart agriculture is an approach that uses data, technology, and resource management to support crop production under variable weather conditions. In Kerala, the deployment is linked to crop yield improvement, loss reduction, resource optimisation, and lower operational costs. Kerala’s farm structure includes a high share of small holdings, with about 92% of farms measuring less than one hectare. Such fragmented holdings create a need for localised weather information and precision farming tools.

Rollout, Training, and Partnerships

The Kerala deployment is part of a phased rollout across Indian states. Punjab was identified as the first implementation location for 100 AI-powered weather stations by 30 March 2026. ANNAM.AI plans to train 10,000 students, rural youth, and agriculture professionals in the use of AI applications in agriculture. A partnership between ANNAM.AI at IIT Ropar and Syngenta was unveiled at Bharat Innovates 2026 in France in June 2026 for crop health monitoring, pest outbreak tracking, and heat-stress management.
