WWF-India EIACP Launches Green Diwali Campaign 2026

The WWF-India EIACP Programme Centre – Resource Partner, supported by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), launched its nationwide Green Diwali Campaign on 20 October 2026. The campaign runs until 8 November 2026, the date of Diwali in 2026, and encourages citizens to avoid firecrackers and celebrate with less pollution and waste.

Campaign coverage and objectives

The campaign targets schools, colleges and other educational institutions, resident welfare associations, and local communities. It gives special attention to the 130 cities covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), India’s national programme for addressing air pollution in identified cities. The initiative aligns with Mission LiFE, the Government of India’s programme promoting environmentally conscious lifestyles. The campaign invites citizens to take a “Green Diwali Pledge”. The listed actions include avoiding firecrackers, using diyas and energy-efficient lights, avoiding single-use plastic, segregating waste, and choosing local products. Educational institutions and community groups are encouraged to organise pledge drives during school assemblies, classes, rallies and community meetings.

Participation and environmental practices

WWF-India encourages citizens to complete its Carbon Footprint Survey to assess their environmental impact. Institutions, community groups and individuals can submit details of their campaign activities through an online form. Submissions may include geo-tagged photographs and a brief activity report. Waste segregation involves separating waste into categories for appropriate handling. Single-use plastic refers to plastic items designed for one use before disposal. The campaign’s listed waste-related actions include avoiding single-use plastic and segregating waste.
