WII to Estimate Populations of India’s Four Bear Species

WII to Estimate Populations of India’s Four Bear Species

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), based in Dehradun, is preparing India’s first national-level study to estimate the populations of all four bear species found in the country. The study will assess their numbers, distribution and geographical range, using field evidence to identify critical habitats and changes in species presence.

Bear Species and Their Habitats

Bears belong to the mammalian family Ursidae. India’s four species are the Himalayan brown bear, Asiatic black bear, sloth bear and sun bear. The Himalayan brown bear occurs in parts of the Himalayan region. The Asiatic black bear inhabits forested areas, including the Himalayas and north-eastern India. The sloth bear is found across parts of the Indian subcontinent, while the sun bear occurs in tropical forests of north-eastern India. Their habitats and distributions differ, so species-wise assessment is needed to map their presence.

Population Assessment Methods

The study will use camera traps, footprint analysis and scat samples to record bear presence and movement patterns. Camera traps capture images of animals passing in front of sensors, while footprints and scat can provide evidence of species occurrence in an area. Researchers will also examine locations where bears were historically sighted but are no longer recorded. The study will assess possible links between changing presence, habitat shifts, forest degradation and human pressure. Older estimates placed the sloth bear population in the Indian subcontinent at approximately 20,000; the new study is intended to provide scientific validation and updated information.

Human-Bear Conflict and Conservation Planning

Uttarakhand faces human-bear encounters, some of which have been fatal. Data on bear distribution and presence zones can support forest department monitoring plans, local alerts and identification of areas requiring habitat improvement. The study’s national scope covers all four species rather than a single species or region. Its findings are intended to help identify areas where monitoring and habitat management are required.

Important Facts for Exams

  • The Wildlife Institute of India is located in Dehradun.
  • The four bear species found in India are the Himalayan brown bear, Asiatic black bear, sloth bear and sun bear.
  • Camera traps, footprints and scat samples are among the methods planned for the study.
  • The older estimate of approximately 20,000 sloth bears refers to the Indian subcontinent, not India alone.

Bears are mammals belonging to the family Ursidae. The planned assessment will cover population estimates, species-wise distribution and geographical range across India.
