US FDA Approves Zydus Hormone Therapy Patch

On 19 October 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted final approval to Zydus Lifesciences for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Estradiol and Levonorgestrel Transdermal System, delivering 0.045 mg/0.015 mg per day. The FDA publicly announced the approval on 20 October 2026. The once-weekly patch is therapeutically equivalent to Bayer’s Climara Pro Transdermal System, the reference listed drug.

Hormone Therapy and the Patch

Estradiol is an estrogen, while levonorgestrel is a progestogen. The patch delivers both hormones through the skin. Its approved uses are treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms caused by menopause and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women with an intact uterus. Vasomotor symptoms include hot flushes and night sweats. The progestogen component helps protect the endometrium, the lining of the uterus, against hyperplasia associated with estrogen use.

Generic Drug Approval and Exclusivity

An ANDA is a US regulatory application used to seek approval for a generic medicine by establishing its equivalence to a reference listed drug. FDA generic-drug requirements include the same active ingredients, strength, dosage form and route of administration as the reference product, along with evidence of bioequivalence. Zydus’s application received a Competitive Generic Therapy designation. The product is eligible for a 180-day exclusivity period upon first commercial marketing, subject to the provisions of the US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Manufacturing and Market Data

Zydus plans to manufacture the patch at its plant in Moraiya, near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. US annual sales for the Estradiol and Levonorgestrel Transdermal System were approximately US$45.7 million, based on IQVIA MAT figures for August 2026 cited by Zydus. MAT refers to moving annual total, a measure of sales over a 12-month period.
