UK Launches Be Ready Emergency Preparedness Campaign
The UK government launched the “Be Ready” emergency preparedness initiative on 22 October 2026 through the Cabinet Office. The initiative is the first phase of a three-year public awareness campaign advising households on preparation for temporary disruptions to essential services.
Household Emergency Supplies
The campaign advises households to prepare for at least three days without services such as electricity, water, telephone networks or internet access. Suggested supplies include non-perishable food, bottled water, cash, prescription medicines and back-up power or communication equipment. The recommended water supply is up to nine litres per person. The campaign advises households to keep batteries fully charged or have a wind-up radio available. Cash and prescription medication are also included in the recommended supplies.
Priority Services Register
The initiative encourages people to take practical steps, including registering with the Priority Services Register. The register helps utility companies identify customers who may need additional support during service disruptions. More than 500 organisations, including businesses, charities and community groups, are partnering with the government to distribute campaign materials and advice across the UK. The British Red Cross’s Director for UK Resilience, Laura Scott, referred to practical preparation and trusted public information in relation to community responses to emergencies.
Emergency Preparedness in the UK
The campaign addresses risks including severe weather, cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and threats to food supply chains. Its household guidance is aligned with preparedness advice in France, Ireland and the Netherlands. The UK Cabinet Office has a central role in government emergency planning and national resilience coordination. The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 provides a statutory framework for emergency preparedness and response, including duties for designated responders.
