Thar Desert: Geography, Ecology and Human Adaptation
Overview
The Thar Desert, also called the Great Indian Desert, is India’s major arid region in the northwest. It is known for extreme heat, low rainfall, saline depressions, desert vegetation, and a long record of human adaptation through water harvesting and pastoral life.
It is also one of the world’s most densely populated desert ecosystems, making it important for both geography and human geography in Prelims revision.
Geographical Extent and Boundaries
The Thar Desert covers about 200,000 sq km. Roughly 85% lies in India and the rest in Pakistan. In India, it spreads across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana, with Rajasthan covering more than 60% of its area.
- East: Bounded by the Aravalli Mountain Range, which checks the eastward spread of sand.
- West: Extends towards the Indus River plain in Pakistan.

The Thar Desert has very high thermal stress and uneven rainfall, with conditions shaped by the southwest monsoon. Aridity is high because evaporation far exceeds precipitation.

- Winter cold: Places like Churu may fall below 0°C.
- Diurnal range: Day-night temperature variation often exceeds 14°C to 17°C.

- Kund / Kundi: Covered underground cisterns that collect runoff from clean artificial catchments.
- Tanka: Circular underground masonry tanks built in houses or village yards.
- Khadin: A water-management system developed by the Paliwal Brahmins of Jaisalmer in the 15th century.

The Indira Gandhi Canal, earlier called the Rajasthan Canal, changed the economy of north-western desert districts by improving water availability for drinking and irrigation.
