Thalapathy Vijay Sworn In as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

C. Joseph Vijay, known as Thalapathy Vijay, was sworn in as the 9th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 10 May 2026. The oath of office and secrecy was administered at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.

Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has 234 elected seats. The 2026 Assembly election returned Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam as the single largest party with 108 seats, and the party formed a coalition government with the Indian National Congress and other parties.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was founded by Vijay in February 2024. The party became the first non-Dravidian party to take power in Tamil Nadu since 1967, after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam dominated state politics for nearly six decades.

  • Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East were the two constituencies contested by Vijay in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
  • Vijay won both constituencies and later resigned from Tiruchirappalli East, retaining Perambur.

  • The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker was scheduled for 12 May 2026.

First-Day Government Orders

On his first day in office, Vijay signed files for 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers, a special women’s safety force with a helpline, and a statewide anti-drug mechanism. He was expected to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly before 13 May 2026.
