Telangana Seeks Higher Tummidihatti Barrage

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi on 5 August 2026 to seek Central intervention in the long-pending dispute with Maharashtra over the proposed height of the Tummidihatti barrage. The barrage is part of the Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project and is planned at Tummidihatti village in Kouthala mandal of the erstwhile Adilabad district on the Pranahita River.

Tummidihatti Barrage and Pranahita-Chevella Project

The Tummidihatti barrage is linked to the Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project, which is associated with irrigation planning in northern Telangana. The Pranahita River is a tributary in the Godavari river system, and the barrage site lies in a region that has been central to inter-state water discussions between Telangana and Maharashtra. The Telangana government has sought approval for a barrage height of 150 metres, while Maharashtra had earlier agreed to 148 metres. The state has stated that the 150-metre level would help it use its allocated Godavari waters through gravity flow and reduce dependence on lift irrigation systems.

Inter-State Water Dispute and FRL

FRL stands for Full Reservoir Level, which is the maximum water level to which a reservoir or barrage is designed to store water. In this case, Telangana has argued that an FRL of 148 metres would not meet the water requirements of north Telangana. On 27 May 2026, the Telangana Chief Minister wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking a meeting to finalise the height and construction modalities of the barrage. Engineering experts had earlier stated in a meeting on 2 May 2026 that a 150-metre barrage could allow utilisation of at least 100 tmcft of water.

Water Storage, Submergence and Irrigation Terms

Submergence refers to land that gets covered by water after the construction of a barrage or reservoir. Telangana has stated that even at 150 metres, the submergence area in Maharashtra would remain below 1,000 hectares. Lift irrigation is a system in which water is pumped to higher elevations, and it is generally costlier than gravity-based irrigation. Gravity flow uses natural slope and elevation difference to move water without pumping.

Important Facts for Exams

  • The Pranahita River is part of the Godavari basin, which is one of India’s major river systems.
  • FRL means Full Reservoir Level and is a standard term in dam and barrage engineering.
  • tmcft stands for thousand million cubic feet and is used to measure large volumes of water.
  • Inter-state river water issues in India are often discussed under the framework of river basin planning and state-level agreements.

The Tummidihatti barrage site is in Kouthala mandal of the erstwhile Adilabad district in Telangana. The meeting on 5 August 2026 was attended by Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and several Members of Parliament.
