Tamil Nadu Creates Five Renewable Energy Zones

Tamil Nadu Creates Five Renewable Energy Zones

Tamil Nadu approved five dedicated renewable energy zones on 19 June 2026. The zones were created under the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited for wind and solar power project administration. The headquarters of the five zones are in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

Renewable Energy Zones in Tamil Nadu

The Chennai zone covers the Chennai, Kancheepuram, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai electricity distribution circles. The Tiruchirappalli zone covers the Tiruchirappalli, Villupuram, and Thanjavur circles. The Tirunelveli and Coimbatore zones manage their respective distribution circles, and the Madurai zone covers the Karur, Erode, and Madurai circles.

Administrative Structure and Functions

Assistant Executive Engineers head project administration and implementation activities in these zones. The zonal structure is linked to approval processing, project coordination, and power evacuation infrastructure for renewable energy projects. The arrangement also covers repowering of wind farms, which is the replacement or upgrading of older wind turbines with newer units.

Associated Green Energy Programmes

The new zones support Battery Energy Storage Systems, PM-KUSUM 2.0, PM Rooftop Solar, and floating solar projects. Battery Energy Storage Systems store electricity for later use, and floating solar projects are installed on water bodies.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Tamil Nadu is one of India’s major states for wind power generation.
  • PM-KUSUM stands for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan.
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems are used to balance variable renewable power supply.
  • Floating solar projects are commonly installed on reservoirs and lakes.

Distribution Circle Coverage

Electricity distribution circles are administrative units used by state power utilities for local project handling. The five-zone model places Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Madurai as regional headquarters for renewable energy administration.
