Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project Completes 41st Tunnel Breakthrough

The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project recorded its 41st tunnel breakthrough on 11 September 2026 with the completion of Escape Tunnel-1. The 125-km railway line is being developed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited under the Ministry of Railways at an estimated cost of Rs 37,000 crore, and its target date for completion is December 2029.

Project Profile

The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project is a broad-gauge railway project in Uttarakhand. The line is designed to connect Rishikesh with Karnaprayag through the Himalayan region, and it includes multiple tunnels, bridges, and viaducts.

Escape Tunnel-1 has a length of 10.847 km, which makes it the second-longest tunnel in the project. The project had reached 78% physical progress by September 2026, and about 97% of the tunnel excavation had been completed.

Tunnelling in Himalayan Terrain

The tunnel breakthrough took place in highly tectonised, multi-folded, and extensively faulted rock formations. The alignment also passed through thick mylonite zones near the Main Boundary Thrust, which is a major geological fault zone in the Himalayas.

Himalayan tunnelling projects often require controlled blasting, advanced support systems, and continuous geological monitoring. Such projects are planned with escape tunnels, ventilation systems, and drainage arrangements for safety and maintenance.

The project had five tunnel breakthroughs remaining as of 12 September 2026. Nishith Sharma served as the Project Manager for Package-I of Max Infra Projects, a contractor associated with the project.
