Reliance, Rolls-Royce Join India’s AMCA Engine Programme

Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce announced a strategic partnership on 14 August 2026 to design, develop and manufacture an indigenous combat engine in India. The collaboration is linked to the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme, which is India’s project for fifth-generation stealth fighter jets. The companies also said they may set up an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India for engine design, development, manufacturing, testing and through-life maintenance.

Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft Programme

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, or AMCA, is a planned Indian fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft programme. Fifth-generation fighter aircraft are generally associated with low observability, advanced avionics, sensor fusion and internal weapons carriage. The AMCA programme requires a high-thrust engine for indigenous development and production in India.

Rolls-Royce and Reliance Industries

Rolls-Royce is a British engineering company known for aerospace propulsion systems, marine engines and power systems. Reliance Industries is an Indian conglomerate with interests in energy, petrochemicals, telecommunications and manufacturing. The partnership combines Rolls-Royce propulsion technology with Reliance manufacturing capacity for aerospace production in India.

Engine Development and Strategic Autonomy

The proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex is intended to cover the full engine lifecycle, including design, development, manufacturing, testing and maintenance. Anant Ambani is the Executive Director of Reliance Industries, and Tufan Erginbilgiç is the Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce. The companies did not disclose financial terms, transaction value or investment size for the initiative.

In May 2026, the Government of India earmarked 15 billion rupees for the next-generation fighter jet programme. The amount was intended to support and accelerate work on the AMCA project.
