The data comes from University of California, Los Angeles report “Spotlight on the Top 25 Methane Plumes in 2025: Landfills”. The Mumbai facility emits approximately 4.9 tonnes of methane per hour. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and the second-largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide. Though it remains in the atmosphere for a shorter duration than carbon dioxide, methane traps significantly more heat. These emissions highlight the need for improved waste management and methane mitigation strategies in India.

Kerala is upgrading its snake-response platform amid rising snakebite cases during a heat wave. The SARPA (Snake Awareness, Rescue and Protection App) helps report snake sightings and coordinate rescue operations. The upgraded version will integrate doctors and snake experts for real-time emergency guidance. It aims to reduce fatalities by improving response time and first-aid decision-making. The app will provide dedicated login access for doctors to guide responders remotely. The initiative strengthens coordination between rescue teams and healthcare facilities.

The Siang Upper Multipurpose Project is a proposed 11,000 Megawatt hydropower project on the Siang River near Geku village in Upper Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh. The Siang River is the upper course of the Brahmaputra River, making the project strategically significant. The project is envisioned as one of India’s largest hydropower reservoirs. It also serves as a strategic response to China’s proposed dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo. The project is being developed by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation.

The National Statistical Office released the 80th round of the National Sample Survey of Health report. Kerala recorded the highest Persons Reporting Illness Ratio (PPRA) or morbidity rate in India at 39.7%. West Bengal recorded the second-highest morbidity rate at 24.5%, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 21.1%. The national average morbidity rate was 13.1%. In Kerala and West Bengal, illness reporting was higher in urban areas and among women. Kerala’s high morbidity rate is linked to its aging population, high life expectancy, lifestyle diseases, and strong health awareness.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau “Crime in India 2024” report, Odisha recorded the highest violent crime rate in the country in 2024. Odisha reported a violent crime rate of 161.6 victims per lakh population, the highest among all Indian states. Odisha also ranked second in India for crimes against women with a crime rate of 118.3 cases per lakh women population. Bihar recorded the second-highest violent crime rate at 83 victims per lakh population, much lower than Odisha’s rate.
