Notes:
The Registrar General of India (RGI) has asked States to achieve universal registration of births and deaths. This follows Supreme Court directives declaring all government hospitals as registrars of births and deaths. Medical officers in charge must report hospital events under Section 8(1)(B) of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act (RBD Act), 1969. Reporting must be done within 21 days. The RBD Act, amended in 2023, makes online registration on the RGI portal compulsory. Registrar General of India works under the administrative control of Ministry of Home Affairs.

Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to dissolve its Madrasa Board and introduce a comprehensive Minority Educational Institutions Act. The Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the Uttarakhand Minority Educational Institutions Bill, 2025. The Bill proposes to repeal the Madrasa Board and rules governing minority-run institutions. It aims to extend Minority Educational Institutions (MEI) status to communities beyond Muslims, including Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Buddhists, and Parsis.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini launched the ‘Swachh Kurukshetra – Mera Kurukshetra, Mera Abhimaan’ cleanliness mission at Gita Gyan Sansthanam, Kurukshetra. The mission is scheduled for 11 weeks, from August 24 to November 7, 2025, aiming to make Kurukshetra the cleanest and most beautiful city in India. The mission is part of Haryana Shehr Swachhta Abhiyan – 2025 and involves mass mobilization to clean every street and corner.

China has agreed in principle to resume trade through Shipki-La in Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh during Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent visit to India. Shipki-La is a motorable mountain pass at 3,930 metres altitude, on the India-China border in tribal Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh. It serves as a boundary post on the frontier between India and China. It is one of the highest motorable passes in the world. The Sutlej River, called Langqen Zangbo in Tibet, enters India through this pass, historically serving as a vital trade corridor with Tibet.

Indore became the first city in Madhya Pradesh and one of only three cities in India to receive the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green City Platinum Certification. Other recipients include Rajkot Smart City Development Limited (RSCDL), Pune Municipal Corporation, and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Certification was based on a six-month evaluation of data across master planning, water and energy conservation, solid waste management, e-governance, green cover expansion, and policy interventions.

Maharashtra launched the Startup, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Policy 2025 to build a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem. The policy targets 1.3 lakh entrepreneurs and 50,000 startups in five years. A 300-acre Innovation City will be built as a hub for startups, corporates, investors, and academia. The city will promote research and innovation through collective efforts. CM Maha Fund with Rs. 500 crore corpus will support grassroots entrepreneurship with loans of Rs. 5–10 lakh.

ACME Group and Japan’s IHI Corporation announced a joint venture to set up India’s largest green ammonia project in Gopalpur, Odisha. The plant will produce 0.4 million tonnes of green ammonia annually mainly for Japanese power and chemical sectors. It will help cut 0.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year and support India’s Green Hydrogen Mission. The project is targeted for commissioning by 2029-30 with focus on exports to Japan. It aligns with the 15th Japan–India Annual Summit 2025 Joint Declaration on Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia. The project will boost Odisha’s green energy hub status, create jobs, and strengthen India-Japan clean energy partnership.

Union Home Minister recently launched the Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) at 5 more airports It was launched at Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Trichy, Calicut, and Amritsar airports. It was first launched at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in 2024. It is meant for Indian nationals and foreign nationals holding Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards. The programme ensures faster, smoother, and secure immigration clearance. The Bureau of Immigration under Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is the nodal agency.

Recently, the Kerala Cabinet approved the draft Wildlife Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2025, giving power to the Chief Wildlife Warden to order the immediate killing of wild animals attacking humans in residential areas. This is the first such amendment by a State in India. The Bill aims to bypass delays in the Central Wildlife (Protection) Act and Union Government’s Standard Operating Procedure. The State Government will get powers to declare animals in Schedule II as vermin, earlier vested only with the Centre. Once declared vermin, anyone can kill them, and their meat consumption is allowed.

Organisations of the Moran community in Assam have started an “economic blockade” in Tinsukia district to demand Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The Morans are among six communities, along with Tea Tribes (Adivasi), Motok, Tai Ahom, Chutia, and Koch-Rajbongshi, pressing for ST recognition. The Moran are an indigenous tribe of Assam and considered one of the region’s aboriginal groups. Historically, they led the Moamoria Rebellion in the 18th century against the Ahom monarchy. They once spoke their own Moran language, related to Dimasa, but now mainly speak Assamese. They are concentrated in Upper Assam, especially Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Sivasagar.
