Punjab Deploys AI System For Real-Time Crime Tracking

The Punjab government has partnered with Indian Institute of Technology Ropar to develop an advanced Artificial Intelligence-based system for real-time crime tracking and analysis. The initiative aims to modernise policing by transforming scattered data into actionable intelligence, strengthening ongoing anti-crime and anti-drug campaigns in the state.

AI-Driven Policing Framework

Under the collaboration, IIT Ropar will design a structured data system equipped with capabilities such as data analytics, voice recognition, and dashboard-based monitoring. These tools will enable law enforcement agencies to track criminal activity in real time and generate insights for quicker decision-making. The system is expected to significantly enhance intelligence-led policing in Punjab.

Integration of Structured and Unstructured Data

A key feature of the project is the integration of both structured and unstructured data. Police records often exist in fragmented formats such as scanned documents and handwritten reports. The new system will digitise and unify these records into a single database, allowing seamless access and analysis. This will reduce delays in investigations and improve data accuracy.

Support for Anti-Crime Campaigns

The initiative is designed to bolster major state campaigns like ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ and ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’. By leveraging AI and predictive models, authorities will be able to identify crime patterns, monitor criminal networks, and anticipate threats more effectively. The Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit (DITSU) in Mohali will coordinate implementation and provide technical assistance.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Artificial Intelligence in policing enables predictive crime analysis and surveillance.
  • Unstructured data includes handwritten records, images, and scanned documents.
  • IITs in India play a growing role in governance and technological innovation.
  • Data integration improves efficiency and speed in criminal investigations.

Enhancing Public Safety and Governance

The project marks a shift towards data-driven governance in internal security. By converting fragmented data into meaningful insights, Punjab Police will be better equipped to respond to evolving crime trends. The initiative is expected to improve detection rates, strengthen preventive policing, and enhance overall public safety through the effective use of emerging technologies.
