Prime Minister Inaugurates RBI Data Centre in Bhubaneswar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) ₹169-crore data centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute on 25 October 2026. The facilities occupy 18.55 acres at Info Valley-II in Jatni, near Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The foundation stone was laid by then-RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on 22 March 2023.

RBI Data Centre Infrastructure

The data centre will host mission-critical payment and settlement systems, including Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT). It is certified to Tier IV by the Uptime Institute, a global data centre standards and certification organisation. Tier IV is its highest data centre classification and specifies fault-tolerant infrastructure. RTGS processes fund transfers individually and in real time, while NEFT settles transactions in batches. Both systems support electronic fund transfers through banks and other eligible entities. The RBI operates these payment systems as part of India’s financial infrastructure.

Digital Payments and Regulation

The Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 provides the statutory framework for the regulation and supervision of payment systems in India. The RBI is the designated authority under the Act. RTGS is generally used for high-value transfers, while NEFT enables electronic transfers without a minimum transaction amount prescribed by the RBI. The Bhubaneswar data centre is intended to support the reach, efficiency and reliability of digital financial services. The facility’s stated functions include hosting payment and settlement platforms that require continuous and secure computing services.

Cybersecurity Training and Technology

The Cybersecurity Training Institute will provide training, research and expertise development in cybersecurity and enterprise technology. Its areas of focus include artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. The institute is intended to build institutional capabilities for addressing cyber risks to banking and financial systems. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, Odisha Governor Brajmohan Ram and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi attended the inauguration.
