PM Modi Inaugurates Rs 35,000 Crore Projects in Vadodara

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multi-sector development projects worth over Rs 35,000 crore in Vadodara, Gujarat, on 8 September 2026. The package included railway, freight, and highway projects, along with new train services and corridor links connected to western India.

Western Dedicated Freight Corridor

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) is a freight-only railway corridor developed by Indian Railways to move goods trains on a separate route from passenger traffic. On 8 September 2026, three sections of the WDFC were dedicated for public use, covering 326 route km at a cost of over Rs 20,700 crore.

The three sections were Sanand (North)-Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). These links provide direct freight connectivity to Mumbai’s port and complete the full operationalisation of the corridor.

Railway Projects and New Services

The Prime Minister flagged off cargo freight train services from four locations and a new passenger train service between Vadodara and Tanda Road. He also dedicated the Jobat-Tanda Road new railway line under the Chhota Udepur-Dhar project.

The Jobat-Tanda Road line connects remote and tribal regions of Alirajpur with the national rail grid. Foundation stones were also laid for three railway projects of more than 329 km in length with an estimated cost of over Rs 9,700 crore.

These railway works include the third and fourth lines between Vadodara and Ratlam. Such multi-line rail projects are used to increase line capacity on busy routes in the Indian Railways network.

Highways and Logistics Network

Foundation stones were laid for three national highway projects valued at about Rs 1,780 crore. National highway projects in India are generally executed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and its implementing agencies.

The 2,800-km dedicated freight corridor network was described as part of the Gati Shakti framework. Gati Shakti is a national infrastructure initiative that integrates rail, road, port, and logistics connectivity.
