- Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award: Instituted in 1991–92 (formerly Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award), this is India’s highest sporting honor. It recognizes spectacular and outstanding performance by a sportsperson over a period of four years. The award includes a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of ₹25 lakh. - Arjuna Award: Established in 1961, it honors consistent high performance over four years alongside qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and discipline. Recipients receive a bronze statuette of Arjuna, a certificate, ceremonial dress, and a cash prize of ₹15 lakh.
- Dronacharya Award: Introduced in 1985 to honor outstanding coaches who enable athletes to excel in international events. It is awarded in two sub-categories: Lifetime Category (cash prize of ₹15 lakh) and Regular Category (cash prize of ₹10 lakh). Recipients receive a bronze statuette of Dronacharya and a scroll.
- Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement: Instituted in 2002, this award honors sportspersons who contributed to sports promotion through their active career and after retirement. It carries a cash prize of ₹10 lakh, a statuette, and a scroll.
- Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar: Launched in 2009 to recognize corporate entities (public and private), sports control boards, and non-governmental organizations playing a visible role in sports identification, nurturing, and promotion. It carries a trophy and a citation across categories like identification of talent and employment of sportspersons.
- Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy: Instituted in 1956–57, it is a running trophy awarded annually to the top-performing university in inter-university tournaments, promoting competitive sports in higher education institutions. The winner receives a cash award of ₹15 lakh.
Financial Assistance and Welfare Schemes for Athletes
To ensure financial stability during and after their sporting careers, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports operates targeted welfare funds and pension schemes.
Scheme of Financial Assistance to Outstanding Sportspersons
The National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) and core ministry budget lines provide direct financial support to athletes. Assistance covers specialized training under foreign coaches, purchase of advanced equipment, international exposure trips, and medical treatment for sports-related injuries.
Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons
Established in 1982, this fund assists outstanding sportspersons living in indigent circumstances. It provides lump-sum financial aid to retired athletes, coaches, and their dependents for medical treatment, training support, or emergency relief.
Scheme of Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons
The government grants lifelong monthly pensions to retired athletes who achieved medals in marquee international events once they attain 30 years of age and retire from active sports.

Flagship Athlete Nurturing Programs
Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)
Formulated in 2014 under the NSDF, TOPS focuses on identifying potential medal prospects for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It provides custom assistance, including personalized coaching staff, sport science support, mental conditioning, and an out-of-pocket allowance (OPA) of ₹50,000 per month for Core Group athletes and ₹25,000 per month for Development Group athletes.
Khelo India Scheme
Launched to revive sports culture at the grassroots level, Khelo India identifies young talent through national competitions (Khelo India Youth Games, University Games, and Winter Games). Selected annual talents receive financial support of ₹5 lakh per year for eight years to cover training, education, and lodging expenses.
