Namami Gange Executive Committee approves nine projects

Three million litres of sewage are dumped into the holy Ganges every day. It is the fifth most polluted river in the world. To reduce the pollution in the river, the Namami Gange Executive Committee recently approved nine projects. These projects are to be implemented at a cost of Rs 1,200 crores. Of these, seven projects are related to reducing pollution and two of the projects will work on Ghat development.

About the nine projects

• The National Mission for Clean Ganga will implement the project
• The projects will be executed in MP, UP, and WB
• Atal Ghat Manjhi in Bihar will be developed at Rs 10 crores
• Development of Ngeshwar Dham Ashram Ghat in Fatehpur: Rs 2.84 crores

Pollution Abatement Projects

In West Bengal, two sewage-treating plants will be set up. One sewage plant will treat 13 million litres per day. The other plant will treat 300 Kilo litres per day. These plants are to be set up in Chakdaha Municipal Town. They will be established at a cost of Rs 123 crores

In UP, three sewage treatment plants will be built and 13 drains will be diverted. One of the plants will be built in Prayagraj and it will treat 43 million litres of sewage per day.

In Bihar, two plants. One with 10,91 MLD capacity and the other with 10.66 MLD capacity. The cost of these projects is Rs 94.12 crores

In MP, two projects were approved. One in River Saraswati and the other to reduce the pollution in river kahn. Another two projects were also sanctioned in MP. They are in Ujjain and in River Kshipra. But have currently been put on hold for further clarification.

Rejuvenation of River Kali

This is also one of the nine projects sanctioned by the committee. The cost of this project is Rs 95.47 crores. Also under this project, artificial wetlands will be created in 8 locations to treat sewage water, industrial water, grey water, etc.

Special First of its kind project

The Survey, Investigation for Rejuvenation and Conservation of Shahdara drain was also approved. This project is the first of its kind as it uses Nature based treatment, that is, the Soil Biotechnology method. It will be implemented using modern surveys such as drones, water quality testing, inlet drain discharge, etc.

Project PIAS approved

PIAS means Pollution, Inventorization, Assessment, and Surveillance on the Ganga Basin. The project will be implemented at RS 114 crores to monitor industrial pollution.
