Millet-based Menu for Armed Forces

In a progressive move, the Ministry of Defence has taken a significant step towards promoting healthy food practices among the defence personnel. The ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to introduce a millet-based menu in the messes, canteens, and other food outlets of the armed forces.

Training for Food Safety and Hygiene

The collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and FSSAI goes beyond menu inclusion. It ensures the training of food handlers and chefs in the messes, canteens, and other food outlets of the armed forces. This training aligns with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and emphasizes the importance of food safety and hygiene in catering to the dietary needs of the defence personnel.

Shared Commitment to Health and Well-being

The joint efforts between the Ministry of Defence and FSSAI signify a shared commitment to the health and well-being of the armed forces. By enabling the personnel to maintain strength and resilience, the collaboration serves the nation’s interests. Furthermore, it extends to promoting nutritious diets among the families of armed forces personnel, fostering healthier lifestyles in the community.

The Significance of Millets for Defence Personnel

According to the defence ministry, the inclusion of millets in the armed forces’ diet holds great importance, considering the challenging terrains and varied climatic conditions faced by the defence personnel. Millets, known for their nutritional value, contribute to a well-balanced and diverse diet, supporting the physical demands and performance requirements of the armed forces.

Promoting Healthy Recipes

To further reinforce the consumption of millets and highlight their health benefits, Union Ministers unveiled a book titled ‘Healthy Recipes for Defence.’ Developed by FSSAI, the book features a range of millet-based dishes. It will serve as a valuable resource for the food outlets of the defence ministry, ensuring the availability of nutritious and delicious meal options for the armed forces.
