Background

The origins of this day can be traced back to Armistice Day, which is celebrated on November 11 all over the world. The first Armistice Day was held on November 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of World War I and to honor the brave soldiers who fought in the war. In India, the day was first marked through a resolution passed by the Congress in 1926.

Why November 11?

Armistice Day is commemorated on November 11 because it marks the armistice that was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany.

Veterans Day

In 1954, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day to honor the living veterans of all wars. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day is a day to pay tribute to the living veterans who have served in wars.

Armed Forces Veterans Day

In 2017, Armistice Day was renamed Armed Forces Veterans Day in India. The fourth Armed Forces Veterans Day was celebrated at the National War Memorial in 2020. The Chief of Army, Chief of Navy, and Chief of Air Force were present at the event.

Why January 14?

Armed Forces Veterans Day is celebrated on January 14th every year, as it marks the day when Field Marshal KM Cariappa, the first Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces, retired.
