Iranian Lawmakers Approve Mehrdad Akhlaghi as Defence Minister
Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly approved Mehrdad Akhlaghi as Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics on 18 October 2026. He succeeds Aziz Nasirzadeh, who was killed on 28 February 2026 during the initial US-Israeli strikes that began the conflict.
Parliamentary Approval and Ministerial Appointment
Akhlaghi received 237 votes in favour and 15 against in an open session of the Islamic Consultative Assembly; no abstentions were recorded. The stated total number of votes cast was 277. Majid Ebn Al-Reza served as acting defence minister after Nasirzadeh’s death and before Akhlaghi’s approval. Under Article 133 of Iran’s Constitution, ministers are appointed by the President and must receive a vote of confidence from the Islamic Consultative Assembly. The Assembly is Iran’s national legislature, commonly called the Majlis.
Career and Sanctions
Akhlaghi has worked in Iran’s defence ministry for 42 years and has led the Defense Industries Organization since 2013. The organisation is associated with Iran’s domestic defence production. Akhlaghi has been subject to United Nations sanctions since 2007 over alleged involvement in nuclear or ballistic-missile activities. He has also faced United States sanctions connected with Iran’s missile programme. These are distinct sanctions measures imposed by different authorities.
Defence Policy Statements
After his approval, Akhlaghi pledged to strengthen the “resistance front”, expand defence production and adapt the ministry’s structure to current security threats. He warned that Iran would deliver a “surprising and extensive” response if the United States and Israel launched another attack.
