INS Sunayna Mission Strengthens Indian Ocean Maritime Cooperation

Amid escalating tensions in West Asia and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the Indian Navy has launched a significant maritime initiative to reinforce regional security. INS Sunayna has been flagged off as the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR from Mumbai, signalling India’s commitment to cooperative maritime engagement and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.

Strategic Context and Mission Launch

The deployment comes as the West Asia conflict enters its fifth week, affecting global energy supply chains and maritime trade routes. The mission was flagged off by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi. The initiative reflects India’s proactive approach to ensuring freedom of navigation and safeguarding critical sea lanes amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Expanding Maritime Competition

Admiral Tripathi highlighted that maritime competition is no longer confined to oil and energy resources. It now extends to strategic domains such as rare earth elements, seabed minerals, fishing resources, and data infrastructure. He noted that increasing global friction has turned the maritime domain into a key arena of geopolitical contestation, necessitating enhanced cooperation among regional partners.

Rising Maritime Security Challenges

The Indian Ocean Region is witnessing a surge in security threats. These include illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, piracy, armed robbery at sea, and narco-trafficking. According to official data, around 3,700 maritime incidents were recorded in the region last year, while narcotics seizures exceeded $1 billion in 2025. Additionally, concerns have been raised over deep-sea research activities that may infringe upon sovereign rights.

The IOS SAGAR mission includes participation from personnel of 16 foreign countries, emphasising multilateral cooperation. The ship will undertake port calls at Colombo, Phuket, Jakarta, Singapore, Chittagong, Yangon, and Male before concluding its journey at Kochi. The deployment will focus on capacity-building activities such as seamanship, navigation, communication, maritime safety, firefighting, damage control, and Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations.
