INS Mahendragiri to Join Indian Navy on July 11

INS Mahendragiri (F38) is the sixth indigenous stealth frigate of the Indian Navy and is scheduled for commissioning on 11 July 2026 at Visakhapatnam. The warship will join the Eastern Fleet under the Eastern Naval Command after delivery to the Navy on 30 April 2026.

Project 17A and Nilgiri-class frigates

INS Mahendragiri belongs to Project 17A, also called the Nilgiri-class programme, which covers advanced stealth frigates for the Indian Navy. The class follows the earlier Project 17 Shivalik-class frigates and includes improved stealth, automation, and combat systems.

Design, construction and indigenous content

The Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy designed the frigate, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai built it. The ship has more than 75% indigenous content, which includes major systems, equipment, and platform integration developed in India.

Weapons, sensors and propulsion

INS Mahendragiri carries surface-to-surface missile systems, surface-to-air missile systems, electronic warfare systems, and anti-submarine warfare systems. It uses a Combined Diesel or Gas, or CODOG, propulsion system, which combines diesel engines and gas turbines for naval operations.

Naming and naval tradition

The frigate is named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats. It is the first Indian Naval warship to bear the name Mahendragiri.
