Indian Railways Approves Mukutban-Gadchandur New Rail Line

Indian Railways approved a new 38.21 km rail line between Mukutban and Gadchandur in Maharashtra at an estimated cost of ₹493 crore. The project is linked with freight movement, passenger connectivity, and direct rail access for industrial areas in Yavatmal and Chandrapur districts.

Mukutban-Gadchandur Rail Corridor

The new line will connect Mukutban in Adilabad, located in Yavatmal district, with Gadchandur in Chandrapur district. The route is designed as a shorter rail link for traffic moving through the coal and cement belt of eastern Maharashtra.

The project is expected to reduce travel distance, transportation time, and operating costs on this corridor. It will also provide an alternative route for freight movement in the region.

Freight and Industrial Connectivity

The Detailed Project Report estimates freight traffic of 6.08 million tonnes per annum on the line. The expected freight basket includes coal, cement, and sponge iron, which are major industrial commodities in the area.

Mukutban and Gadchandur are associated with cement plants and coal mines operated by Western Coalfields Ltd. The line will also create direct connectivity between the coal and cement industrial cluster and the Majri-Nanded route.

Railway Operations and Network Impact

The project is intended to decongest the existing Wardha-Manikgarh section. This section is part of the rail network used for freight movement in central India.

After commissioning, the line is expected to support two MEMU trains in each direction daily. MEMU stands for Mainline Electric Multiple Unit and is used for suburban and short-distance passenger services in India.
