Indian Navy and Royal Navy Exercise Konkan 2025

Exercise Konkan 2025 began on 5 October 2025 off India’s western coast. This biennial naval exercise between India and the United Kingdom has matured over two decades. It now involves advanced maritime operations, strengthening cooperation and readiness between the two navies. The 2025 edition features the largest and most complex drills to date, reflecting deepening strategic ties.

Overview of Exercise Konkan

Exercise Konkan is a bilateral maritime drill conducted by the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy. It aims to improve interoperability and mutual understanding in naval operations. The exercise takes place in two phases – harbour and sea. Over the years, it has evolved from simple drills to multifaceted operations involving surface, sub-surface, and air assets.

Harbour Phase Activities

The harbour phase runs from 5 to 8 October 2025. It includes professional exchanges, cross-deck visits, and cultural events. Sports fixtures and social interactions build camaraderie. Joint Working Group meetings and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges enhance knowledge sharing. These activities promote trust and coordination beyond operational drills.

Sea Phase Operations

The sea phase occurs from 9 to 12 October 2025. It features complex maritime exercises such as anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare drills. Flying operations and seamanship evolutions are also conducted. Both navies deploy frontline warships, submarines, and aircraft. The Indian Navy fields the INS Vikrant carrier battle group, while the Royal Navy leads the UK Carrier Strike Group 25 (UK CSG 25) with HMS Prince of Wales.

Multinational Participation and Strategic Significance

This year, UK CSG 25 includes assets from Norway and Japan, adding multinational depth. The exercise puts stress on the shared commitment to secure, open, and free seas. It aligns with the India-UK Vision 2035 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The drills enhance regional maritime stability and demonstrate combined naval strength.

Post-Exercise Engagements

After Exercise Konkan concludes on 12 October, UK CSG 25 will conduct a one-day joint exercise with the Indian Air Force on 14 October. This integration of naval and air forces deepens joint operational capabilities. Following this, the UK group will continue its deployment in the Indo-Pacific region.
