India Wins International Social Security Association Award 2025

India has made remarkable progress in social security coverage over the past decade. From covering just 19% of its population in 2015, social protection now reaches 64.3% of citizens in 2025. This milestone includes over 940 million people. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Social Security Association (ISSA) have recognised this achievement. India received the ISSA Award 2025 for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Social Security’ at the World Social Security Forum held in Kuala Lumpur. This award marks India’s leadership in global social protection.

Expansion of Social Security Coverage

India’s social security coverage has grown rapidly. It now covers nearly two-thirds of the population. This expansion includes formal and informal sectors. The increase is driven by government schemes targeting vulnerable and unorganised workers. This growth has led India to hold the largest voting share in the ISSA General Assembly with thirty votes.

Role of Digital Infrastructure

Digital public infrastructure plays a key role in delivering social security benefits. The e-Shram portal is a central digital database connecting over 310 million unorganised workers to welfare schemes. It provides a multilingual and seamless interface for easy access. The National Career Service (NCS) portal complements this by linking skilled job seekers with employers. NCS integrates with e-Shram to ensure workers retain social security benefits while accessing global job markets.

Contributions of Social Security Organisations

India’s Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) are vital to the social security system. They offer healthcare, insurance, and pension schemes to millions of workers. These organisations have adapted to changing labour markets and technological advances to improve service delivery.

Policy and Technological Reforms

India is strengthening social security through reforms in policy, processes, and digital tools. The approach combines financial inclusion, skill development, self-employment support, and innovation. This holistic strategy aims to create new income opportunities and a robust social safety net. It reflects the vision of inclusive growth and empowerment of the marginalised.

Global Recognition and Future Outlook

India’s achievements in social security have earned global recognition. The ISSA Award 2025 places India among the top countries in social protection coverage. India’s leadership role at international forums reflects its commitment to shaping the future of social security. The country aims to inspire youth and policymakers worldwide through its inclusive model.
