Recently, the Central Government started matching the data from the eShram portal to that of the Ration Card (National Food Security Act (NFSA)) data, which is under the control of the Department of Food and Public Distribution. Matching of these two data sets revealed that of the 28.60 crore eShram registrants, 20.63 crore individuals have registered in the NFSA database. The eShram portal data was already matched with PMSYM and NCS; now it is being matched with the ration card.
What is eShram portal?
eShram portal was launched in August 2021 by the Union Labour Ministry to create a National Database for migrant or unorganized workers across India. It is India’s first national-level database of unorganized workers- including gig workers and platform workers.
Why was eShram portal launched?
The database in the eShram portal will help deliver a Universal Account Number (UAN) for unorganized or migrant workers. Using this number, the workers can access social security and other government initiatives easily. This will help in inclusive economic growth. Beneficiaries can be easily identified. It helps in targeted growth.
What are the details provided by the eShram portal?
This will contain details like the workers’ occupation, educational qualifications, skill types, address, etc. to aid their employment. As of February 24, 2023, over 28.60 crore workers have been registered in this portal.
Linking with NCS
The eShram portal was already linked with the National Career Service portal. More than ten lakh eShram registrants are on the NCS. This was done to increase international opportunities for the youth.
Linking with PMSYM
The eShram portal was already with Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan Dhan. This scheme was launched to provide old-age protection to unorganized workers. Because they are not covered under any other pension schemes in the country like New Pension Scheme or the Employment Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) or Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).
The eSHRAM was launched mainly for unorganized workers who are mostly illiterates. Their awareness about other schemes in the country is very less. Therefore, it is essential to link with other schemes so that they gain benefits from those schemes as well.
All the linking was done by the Labor and Employment ministry.
