India Targets 874 GW Power Capacity by 2031-32

India’s installed power generation capacity is projected to reach 874 GW by 2031-32. As of 30 June 2026, the total installed capacity stood at 548,858 MW, or about 548.86 GW. Non-fossil fuel sources accounted for 54.18% of the installed capacity on the same date, above the Nationally Determined Contribution target of 50% for 2030.

Installed Capacity Mix

Installed power capacity is the maximum electrical power that generating stations can supply at a given time. India’s capacity mix includes thermal, hydro, nuclear, solar, wind, and other renewable sources. The expansion plan for 2031-32 covers generation, storage, and transmission assets across these categories.

Thermal, Hydro and Nuclear Expansion

India plans to add at least 80 GW of coal-fired thermal power capacity by 2031-32. Between April 2023 and June 2026, 21,080 MW of coal-based capacity was commissioned, and 47,545 MW remained under construction. Thermal power continues to provide firm baseload supply in the national grid.

Energy Storage and Grid Infrastructure

Energy storage projects are part of the capacity expansion plan. As of 3 August 2026, 15,870 MW of pumped storage projects and 15,754 MW of battery energy storage systems were under construction. India also plans to add about 191,474 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 1,274 GVA of transformation capacity between 2022-23 and 2031-32.
