India Qualifies for AFC U20 Asian Cup After 20 Years

The Indian men’s U20 football team qualified for the AFC U20 Asian Cup main tournament after 20 years, with its last appearance recorded in 2006. India secured qualification on 6 September 2026 after a 3-0 win over Bangladesh at Do’stlik Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

AFC U20 Asian Cup

The AFC U20 Asian Cup is the continental football championship for men’s under-20 national teams in Asia. It is organised by the Asian Football Confederation, which governs association football in Asia and Australia.

India’s Group B Campaign

India finished the Group B qualifiers with six points from three matches. The team recorded wins against Syria and Bangladesh and lost to Uzbekistan.

India’s goals against Bangladesh were scored by Danny Meitei Laishram in the 25th minute, Vishal Yadav in the 60th minute, and Md Arbash in the 79th minute. Head coach Mahesh Gawali led the side in the qualifying campaign.

Qualification Format and Tournament Details

India qualified as one of the seven best runners-up across eight qualifying groups. Uzbekistan topped Group B with nine points, followed by India with six points, Syria with three points, and Bangladesh with zero points.

The AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 is scheduled to be held in China from 24 March to 10 April 2027. The top four teams in the tournament will qualify directly for the FIFA U20 World Cup 2027.
