India Plans Clean Energy Showcase at BRICS Meet

India will host the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Gurugram, Haryana, on 25-26 June 2026 under its BRICS Chairship 2026. The Energy Track theme is “सर्वेषां ऊर्जम्” and it is linked with the phrase “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability (BRICS)”.

BRICS Energy Cooperation

BRICS is a grouping of major emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting is a ministerial-level forum for cooperation on energy security, energy access, technology and sustainability. India’s energy agenda for its BRICS presidency has three priorities: energy security and sustainability, energy access and equity, and technology and innovation. BRICS nations accounted for 51% of global solar electricity generation in 2024, compared with 15% a decade earlier.

India’s Energy Transition Profile

India has recorded more than a 50-fold increase in solar power capacity over the past decade. The country has also deployed over 60 million smart meters across its power distribution system. India has set a target of 410 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2032. Energy storage systems include batteries, pumped hydro storage and other grid-balancing technologies.

Biofuels and Grid Infrastructure

India has achieved 20% ethanol blending in petrol and has introduced E85 fuel in the domestic market. Ethanol blending is a biofuel policy measure that mixes ethanol with petrol for transport use. India is expanding Green Energy Corridors and promoting regional grid connectivity through One Sun One World One Grid. Transmission and distribution networks are part of the electricity value chain that carries power from generation plants to consumers.
