India Launches Khet Bachao Abhiyan for Rabi 2026
The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare will launch the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan-Rabi 2026 on October 22, 2026. Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will launch the campaign from Karnal, Haryana. It is scheduled to run until November 30, 2026, and focuses on sustainable agriculture, soil health and judicious use of agricultural resources.
Campaign objectives and agricultural practices
The campaign will promote balanced fertiliser use based on soil testing. Soil testing assesses the nutrient status of soil and helps guide fertiliser application according to crop requirements. Crop diversification is another campaign focus, particularly the cultivation of oilseeds, pulses and horticultural crops. The campaign will also encourage the productive use of fallow fields and proper management of crop residues. Natural farming and the use of organic and bio-based agricultural products will be promoted through awareness programmes, training sessions and field demonstrations. These activities are intended to provide farmers with practical information on the promoted practices.
Implementation and participating institutions
Farmers’ conferences, Kisan Chaupals, training sessions and field demonstrations will be held at state, district, block and Gram Panchayat levels. Agriculture departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes and agricultural universities will collaborate in these activities. An awareness programme connected with the campaign was held on June 5, 2026, in Pinakinagar and Kamlapur villages of North and Middle Andaman. ICAR-KVK, North & Middle Andaman, organised it with UTATMA and the Department of Agriculture.
Rabi season and crop calendar
Rabi crops are generally sown during the cooler months, from October to December, and harvested in spring. Wheat, barley, mustard and gram are examples of Rabi crops grown in India.
