The fifth edition of the India-Australia joint military exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 began on 19 October 2026 at the Foreign Training Node in Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam. It is scheduled to continue until 1 November 2026, with around 240 personnel from the two armies participating.
Exercise and Participating Units
AUSTRAHIND is a bilateral army exercise involving Indian and Australian Army personnel. The Indian contingent in the 2026 edition includes troops from the Garhwal Rifles, while the Australian contingent includes troops from 13 Brigade. Each country has contributed approximately 120 personnel. An observer delegation from New Zealand is participating for the first time in this edition. The previous edition was held at Irwin Barracks in Perth, Australia, from 13 to 26 October 2025.
Theme and Training Activities
The theme is “Joint Sub-Conventional Operations in Island and Coastal Environment under Chapter VII of the UN Mandate.” The exercise is designed to develop a common understanding of tactics for operations in island and coastal terrain and to practise operational coordination between the participating armies. Training activities include coordinated operations in coastal and island environments, surveillance, reconnaissance, protection of vital installations, and responses to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) contingencies. Surveillance involves monitoring an area, while reconnaissance involves gathering information about terrain or activity.
United Nations Chapter VII and HADR
Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter concerns action by the UN Security Council in response to threats to the peace, breaches of the peace and acts of aggression. It provides for non-military measures under Article 41 and military action under Article 42. HADR refers to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief activities, including support for affected populations during emergencies. In military exercises, HADR training can include coordination, relief activities and response planning.
