ICC Sets Cricket Qualification Framework for LA28 Olympics
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced changes to the cricket qualification framework for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 in October 2026, after meetings in Dubai. The Games will feature separate men’s and women’s Twenty20 (T20) competitions, with six teams in each event.
Qualification Tournaments
The men’s and women’s Olympic qualifying tournaments have been moved from 2027 to January and February 2028. The ICC has not yet announced the venues for either tournament. Each tournament will include eight teams: the seven highest-ranked eligible teams that have not already qualified, plus the winner of the Caribbean Regional Qualifier. The supplied framework does not state how many places each tournament will award.
Direct Qualification
Australia, India, South Africa and Great Britain have secured direct qualification for the women’s event based on their performances at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Men’s direct-entry places will be determined using the ICC Men’s T20I rankings as of 31 December 2026. The highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania will be considered. The host nation, the United States, can secure direct entry for its men’s and women’s teams if each ranks among the top 15 in the relevant T20I rankings during the qualification period, from 30 June to 31 December 2026. If the US women’s team does not meet the top-15 requirement by 31 December 2026, an additional qualification place will be determined by the Women’s Champions Trophy standings in February 2027, using 1 March 2027 as the cut-off date.
