Chandannagar Jalbhara Sweet Gets GI Tag

Jalbhara sweet from Chandannagar in Hooghly district, West Bengal, received the Geographical Indication tag on 26 June 2026. The sweet is also known as Jalbhora Sandesh and has a recorded legacy of more than 220 years in Bengal’s confectionery tradition.

Geographical Indication in India

A Geographical Indication is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics linked to that place. In India, GI registration is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, and the registration is administered by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai.

Features of Jalbhara Sweet

Jalbhara is made with a soft chhena shell and a liquid filling. The filling is traditionally prepared with rose syrup or nolen gur, which is date palm jaggery syrup. The sweet is associated with Chandannagar’s culinary identity and is made in other parts of Bengal as well.

Origin and Historical Association

The sweet is linked to the Telinipara neighbourhood of Chandannagar. Its creation is associated with confectioner Surjya Modak and his son Siddheshwar Modak around 1843 to 1844. The GI application for the sweet was submitted in September 2022.
