Gujarat Launches ‘Lake and Air Watch’ for Urban Environmental Monitoring

gujarat/">Gujarat is strengthening its efforts toward sustainable urban development with the launch of the ‘Lake and Air Watch’ initiative under the Gujarat Urban Development Mission (GUDM). The programme aims to monitor lake health and air quality in real time across cities. Introduced under the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department of the state government, the initiative supports the broader vision of building environmentally resilient and future-ready cities as part of India’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ mission.

Addressing Urban Environmental Challenges

Rapid urbanisation has created multiple environmental challenges in cities, including polluted lakes, declining groundwater recharge and deteriorating air quality. Urban lakes are increasingly affected by pollution, siltation and reduced water quality, while densely populated areas face rising levels of air pollution. The ‘Lake and Air Watch’ initiative seeks to tackle these issues by integrating monitoring systems across departments, enabling faster and coordinated responses.

Use of Satellite Technology for Lake Monitoring

The initiative will utilise satellite technology to monitor various indicators of lake health. These include changes in lake area, detection of waste accumulation and the growth of algae. The system will generate alerts whenever abnormalities are detected, allowing authorities to take timely conservation measures. Such monitoring will help prevent further degradation of urban water bodies and support long-term ecological restoration.

Real-Time Air Quality Monitoring Network

Alongside lake monitoring, the initiative will establish air quality monitoring stations across the state. These stations will be installed in 17 municipal corporations and 152 municipal areas, providing real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) data. Automatic alerts will be triggered if pollution levels rise beyond safe limits, enabling authorities to implement immediate corrective measures to control emissions and improve urban air quality.

Important Facts for Exams

  • The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures the level of air pollution and its health impact.
  • Satellite monitoring can track environmental changes such as water spread, vegetation and pollution.
  • Urban lakes play an important role in groundwater recharge and urban climate regulation.
  • Climate resilience refers to the ability of cities to adapt to and manage environmental challenges.

Integrated Digital Platform for Environmental Management

Under the project, data on lake health and air quality will be consolidated at the state level through a centralised digital dashboard. The platform will display maps, environmental trends, alerts and operational updates to support effective coordination between departments. The information will also be made accessible to citizens, promoting transparency and public awareness while contributing to improved urban environmental management across Gujarat.
