The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has elected Ethiopia, Bolivia, Sweden, Kazakhstan and Italy or the Netherlands as the non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2017-2018 term. In accordance with the agreement, Italy will take the Security Council seat for 2017 and the Netherlands for 2018. The two-year term of new members will start from January 1, 2017 and will replace Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela. The Security Council is made up of 15 nations. Five permanent members hold veto power—the U.S., China, Russia, France and the U.K. The 10 non-permanent members two-year terms rotate among various countries, with specific quotas for each region of the world.

The Keibul Lamjao National Park is a national park in the Bishnupur district, Manipur. It is the only floating park in the world and an integral part of Loktak Lake. Recently, it is in news because Manipur’s brow antlered deer ‘Sangai’ has been included in the Centre-sponsored endangered species recovery programme. The other animals included in the list are the Great Indian bustard, Gangetic dolphin and dugong (medium-sized marine mammal). The Sangai deer is found only at the Keibul Lamjao National Park and is the only species from the North East to be included in the list. It is listed as “endangered” in IUCN Red List and Schedule I of the Indian Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

The Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has launched the web-mobile app “Crop Manager for Rice-based Systems (CMRS)” for better crop and nutrient management for Bihar farmers. The CMRS will provide irrigated and rainfed farmers with rice-based cropping systems in Bihar with a crop and nutrient management guideline customized to the needs of an individual farmer. The app is designed for use by extension workers, crop advisers, input providers and providers of services who interview a farmer using a personal computer, smart phone or tablet.

Sweden has recently launched a test stretch of an electric road in Sandviken to conduct tests with electric power for hybrid heavy transports on public roads. With this, Sweden has become the first country in the world to have electric road. The tests will be conducted on the parts of road E16 and will continue till 2018. They will provide knowledge of how electric roads work in practice and whether the technology can be used in the future. The experiment is based on the government’s goal of energy efficiency and a fossil fuel-free vehicle fleet by 2030 and will contribute to strengthening Sweden’s competitiveness.
