DRDO Shortlists Kalyani, SSS Defence for Indigenous 20mm Gun

On 19–20 October 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) shortlisted SSS Defence and Kalyani Group as Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPP) for India’s first indigenous 20mm aviation gun and turret system. The system is intended for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) helicopters: the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mk-IV Rudra and the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand.

20mm Aviation Gun Systems

A 20mm cannon is a medium-calibre weapon, with the calibre referring to the approximate diameter of its bore. The DRDO project covers the design and manufacture of both the gun and its turret system for helicopter integration. The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a DRDO laboratory based in Pune, is leading the project. Rudra and Prachand currently use French-designed THL-20 turret systems fitted with European M621 cannons. The proposed indigenous system is intended to replace this imported equipment. The project is described as India’s first effort to conceptualise, design and manufacture an aviation medium-calibre gun domestically.

Helicopter Platforms

The ALH is a multi-role helicopter developed by HAL, and its Mk-IV variant is known as Rudra. The LCH Prachand is an attack helicopter developed by HAL for armed forces operations, including in high-altitude areas. The indigenous 20mm gun and turret are intended for integration into both helicopter fleets.

Development and Production Framework

ARDE and HAL signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2025 to collaborate on indigenising critical helicopter weapon systems. The new gun and turret system’s development phase is projected to take approximately two years. After development and acceptance trials, production orders are to be divided between the two shortlisted partners: the lowest bidder will receive 60 per cent, and the other partner will receive 40 per cent. The project forms part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing. Development-cum-Production Partners undertake development work and are positioned to manufacture the resulting system after it meets the required trials and acceptance criteria.

Important Facts for Exams

  • ARDE is a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
  • Rudra is the armed ALH Mk-IV variant developed by HAL.
  • The existing THL-20 turret system uses the European M621 cannon.
  • The planned production allocation is 60 per cent to the lowest bidder and 40 per cent to the other partner.

ARDE and HAL signed their collaboration MoU in 2025, and DRDO shortlisted SSS Defence and Kalyani Group in October 2026. The planned system is intended for HAL’s Rudra and Prachand helicopter fleets.
