Delhi Inaugurates 200-Tonne-Per-Day Biogas Plant
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a biogas plant with a capacity of 200 tonnes per day (TPD) at Goyla Dairy on 19 October 2026 under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan. The plant was approved in 2018. Delhi’s Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is establishing biogas facilities to process cattle dung and biodegradable waste generated in dairy colonies.
Biogas Plants in Delhi
Delhi’s first large-scale 200-TPD biogas plant began operating at Nangli Dairy in West Delhi’s Najafgarh in September 2025. The facility covers 2.72 acres and was built at a cost of about ₹16 crore, with partial funding from the Urban Development Fund of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The Nangli plant is designed to process dung and biodegradable waste from Nangli and Kakrola dairies, which together generate around 200 metric tonnes of dung daily. It is expected to produce about 14,000 cubic metres of raw biogas and 5.6 tonnes of purified compressed biogas (CBG) each day. The CBG is to be supplied to Indraprastha Gas Limited, while the plant will also produce organic manure.
Biogas and Compressed Biogas
Biogas is produced when microorganisms break down organic matter, such as animal dung, in the absence of oxygen; this process is called anaerobic digestion. Raw biogas primarily contains methane and carbon dioxide, while purification removes carbon dioxide and other impurities to produce CBG. Compressed biogas can be used as a transport fuel and supplied through gas distribution systems. The organic residue left after anaerobic digestion can be processed into manure. Cattle dung and other biodegradable waste are feedstocks used in biogas production.
Delhi’s Waste Management Plans
The Delhi government, through the MCD, has established three 200-TPD biogas plants in the preceding 18 months and plans to establish six more. The plants are intended to process part of the estimated 1,500 tonnes of cow dung generated daily in Delhi. The MCD also plans to install 10 biogas plants and nine wastewater treatment facilities, and to upgrade drainage systems in dairy colonies. These measures are planned to prevent waste from entering the Yamuna River.
